A Return to Louisville Nature Center

We took a hike at the Louisville Nature Center this morning (before the heat wave arrives later in the week). First, we visited the Bird Blind:
 Hey! You're not a bird!
It's a raccoon, if you can't see it well.

Nibbling all the way back home
(I think he lives under the building.)
Something big? With wheels? To move around? Why not?
 No, THAT way, Lewis!
Hiking didn't go so well. I'd put him down on the trail and try to point to something in the distance to go check out, but he just kept turning back and wanted to go the opposite direction. I tried carrying him a bit and plopping him deeper into the woods, but he just kept trying to walk back. Sooo, luckily I'd brought our backpack carrier (that I've so far only practiced using inside).
 Ready for action!
My enthusiasm was gone after about five minutes of having him on my back. He is HEAVY! And this carrier put all of the weight on my shoulders instead of my hips (the hip belt rode way high, so I need to see if it's adjustable or if this is just not made for tall people). I also forgot to pick up a map and am not familiar with these trails (go outdoor lover, go), but we made it out. My shoulders are still killing me, but that's okay. Next time (assuming it isn't approaching 100 degrees and I can't stand the closeness), I might try the Ergo. I tried the jogging stroller on this trail last summer, but had to turn back because the trail was so narrow. Or, maybe he'll decide he can walk. :) But then we get into poison ivy and stinging nettles and all that business.

Summertime and Shenanigans

We've been keeping busy since returning from vacation! Unpacking, trying to tame the house and yard, getting back to a normal routine, staying cool, and trying to keep up with an ever-wild man, Lewis.
Does he need a man purse? I think he needs a man purse.
He likes to carry the camera bag around on his shoulder, so I was thinking about buying or making a small bag for him to see if he'd like to use it to carry actual things around.
 The Garden Has Gone Crazy!
The zucchini plants (2) and cherry tomato have gone wild, especially. There is a second tomato plant that is pretty normal-looking, but the cherry took off upwards and outwards--it had outgrown its cage when we got home from vacation and bent itself and the cage over sideways. I've since gone and gotten a stake to try to help get it up off the yard. None of the tomatoes are ready yet, but I did spot an eversoslightly orange one this morning. :) Soon, we'll have them coming out of our ears!
The zucchini plants are taller than Lewis (I guess they are in a raised bed). In the past, we've gotten 1, maybe 2, zucchinis, and then they die off. This year already we've pulled off 6, I believe, and I've had to throw out 3 or 4 that haven't grown properly and/or rotted. There are 4-5 that will be ready to pick in the next day or two. Unfortunately, I'm not loving zucchini on its own, so I've had to shred some and put it in spaghetti sauce (to freeze) and made one batch of zucchini bread so far. I did make a corn and zucchini dish that was really good, so we can eat it that way if it continues to grow wildly.

And now onto the shenanigans:
 Can't reach? No problem!
Stinker is figuring things out. He does this with the wicker storage cubes in our living room, too--pushes them up to the baby gate, climbs atop the cube, then tries to climb over the gate (so far unsuccessfully because I run over to get him).
He likes to get in the pool with his clothes on.
We can't walk by without him either grabbing a cup to take a drink (and pour water all down the front of him) or falling in/climbing in. He usually reaches in for a cup and falls in, but more and more, he'll just climb right in, intentionally. No swimsuit, no problem. :)
 Soaking wet.
And this isn't a shenanigan, so much, but just reminded me that he tries to put his shoes on now! On this day, he would go over and stand on a shoe and say eh-eh-eh until we helped him. He's also started 'helping' us when we're dressing him (Kevin's mom noticed that when babysitting this weekend--he'll hold a leg out for shorts or pushes his arm through the arm hole in his shirt).

And finally, the crib fiasco! We waited to see if his climbing out of the crib was a one-time thing or would continue. Saturday morning, we woke up to a loud thump and crying out (Kevin and I both JUMPED out of bed so fast). He was fine, but I decided that was that, and we needed to do something.

Option A: Crib Tent
Really like the idea, but after reading reviews (danger, collapse, strangulation, etc.), I got freaked out enough that I don't feel comfortable going that route.

Option B: Toddler Bed
I thought I'd read that 2 1/2 to 3 years was when this would happen, but this is what we are going to do.

I read up on our particular crib (which transitions from crib to toddler bed to twin bed to double bed), and it is only meant to be a crib until the child is 35 inches tall--then it needs to convert to a toddler bed. Lewis is 33 inches tall (or 33 3/4 in, based on the pediatrician's office's measurements from 6 weeks ago), so it looks like he has reached the max (or has long enough and strong enough toes to make up the difference).

To convert it, we will just be removing the front railing, so the other 3 sides will stay intact. I ordered a crib rail (a smaller, shorter mesh barrier to keep him from rolling out), so once it arrives, Operation Crib to Toddler Bed can begin. The mesh rail doesn't stretch the entire length of the mattress, so he'll still have room on either end to get in/out of bed. I know we need to get him into that set-up for his safety, but I'm already dreading those first few nights. :/

I also need to go through and totally childproof his room so that he can't get into any trouble when he's out of bed.

In-the-Meantime: Sleep Sacks!
In doing my research, I came across a mom who said she used Halo Sleep Sacks to discourage climbing--they don't allow their legs to stretch as far, and I think the extra fabric piled up around his feet throws him off enough to not try to move much in them. I just happened to have two that I picked up at Goodwill--they are size 2-3T (so they're really too big still), but so far, so good--he looks like a mini-monk, too, which is cute.
Ommm.
Like a monk.
Rockin' the Sleep Sack :)
Work it, Lew.

We haven't had any more incidents since trying the sleep sacks Saturday nap onward, so we'll keep using them until the crib rail arrives later this week or early next week. THEN we're onto Boise, so I might end up waiting until after we get home to rock his world with a toddler bed situation.

Did you hear that, Emily? Boise! Next week!!

Oh My

My thoughts as I was waking up this morning were something like:

(thump)
What was that?
(thump)
Was that his door handle?
(thump)
(thump)
(thump)
Oh, my God. He climbed out of his crib.

Vacation in the Outer Banks

We just returned from an incredibly fun and relaxing week in the Outer Banks with Ben and Adie! On the way there, we broke the driving into about 9 hours on Saturday and 4 hours on Sunday, and coming home Sunday we powered through about 14 hours. Lewis was pretty good in the car, considering--there were a few times I was wishing I could have some space from him, but overall, he was a trooper, Ben/Adie were so graceful with a sometimes fussy Lew (and me), and we all survived. :)

I posted pictures on facebook so I won't double-post, but here are some more pictures and a few videos from our week:
Rolling out of the driveway
Road trip!!
Grillmaster Adie on the first evening
(with an especially large spatula)
Our house
This is what he does when we say we're going to get him--he runs and giggles and then waits for us to scoop him up. Kevin's been playing this game with him for awhile now--I love hearing the sound of his giggles coming up from the basement. :)
A bit clingy at the beach at first (but oh, how that would change as the week went on)
:) Make sure your volume is on for that one. Poor little guy.
Looking pretty scared, still.
Slowly warming up to the idea
The 'Keep Off the Dunes' signs were very enticing to Big Lew.
Our ocean view (zoomed in)
See it, there? To the right of the darker brown house? Very small sliver, just a shade darker than the sky. Breathtaking, I know! :)
Singing to us all at dinner.
Yummy Lemongrass Wheat
This brewery (Outer Banks Brewing Station) had really good beer and really good food AND a playground and live music in the backyard AND is wind-powered AND their shirts say 'Wish You Were Beer.' I'm pretty sure it was heaven. (It is located near where the Wright Brothers took their first flights, hence the powerful wind).

Adie and I went kayaking next, but all of my pictures are on a (film) water camera, so it might be awhile before I get those developed.

Speaking of wind, we had a bit of a windstorm come in the second half of the week:
Where's the beach?
The surf was in probably 30 feet further than it had been earlier in the week. We had a little strip of sand to put our stuff, and still had fun on the beach and caught some sun. We couldn't get in the water because of the red flag/rip current warnings, but we took a lot of walks, took turns wrangling Lew, played in the sand, sat in the surf, etc. We did have a few days earlier in the week where we got to swim in the ocean, but we wished we'd had a few more. Hopefully next time! :)
Churning like a beast
Although we didn't have as much in-the-ocean time as we'd have liked, we did have time for a dance party! Lew kept wanting to run towards the water, so we were all trying to keep him contained.

And perhaps our favorite part of the week (to drown any sorrows):
Duck Donuts!
We went 3 times...2 times for breakfast, and 1 time for a pre-dinner snack. They make your donuts fresh before your eyes, then ice and decorate them to your specifications. They are warm and gooey and delicious (and are cake donuts for any fellow donut lovers out there). :)

It was a great trip! I usually don't think I'd like to revisit places, but I would definitely love going back to Duck. I loved the area, our neighborhood, the time of year (not high season yet), etc. I feel like there is so much to do there, and we barely made a dent. Great week.

A Few Outtakes from 16 mo. Shoot

Our first photo shoot away from home was pretty wild this morning. There were a few outtakes:
 Oopsy daisy. Getting down.
 Take that, dog.
Great one, if not for Kevin being in it.
Whoop, yep, can still see you, Kevin.
Now you see it (the dog),
Now you don't!

16 Months Old

16 Months Old
And NOT wanting to sit still at all this morning, even with Kevin, Ben, and I dancing and singing for him.

His stats this month (from BabyCenter):

Height: 33 inches (75th-90th percentile) by our measurements OR 33 3/4 inches (90th-95th percentile) from last month's doctor's office measurements
Weight: 29.5 pounds (90th-95th percentile)
Head Size: 20 1/4 inches (above 95th percentile)

What he's doing this month:
  • He loves to play with other kids--on vacation this week, we've hit up a couple of playgrounds, and he runs right in, shrieks with excitement, and tries to interact with the kids. One slightly older boy put a bucket on his head, but Kevin said Lew just laughed it off. :)
  • He really likes to be chased--we say 'I'm gonna get you...' and he runs and giggles and then sometimes waits for us to 'get' him.
  • He has started vocalizing more the past few weeks--he is really trying to say things to us, it seems. He's still saying 'Uh-Oh' and his Bs and Ms and Ns and Ts and Ds and Ls (or La La La La La) and Ws. He mimics us well when we click our tongue at him or sing (La-La-La). Just the past few days, I've noticed him saying words with different beginning and ending sounds...so instead of just 'Da,' it sounded more like 'Dat' with a pronounced D and T sound. He sings a lot.
  • The past week, he has started gagging himself every so often. He sticks his fingers in his mouth, maybe to see what it does?? We've heard the gagging sound a few times, then smelled some spit up smells once, and then the other day, he did it and made himself puke...3 separate times. Ick. Keeping an eye on it.
  • I have found that he likes to eat off of a fork, so I bought him his own forks and spoons last week. I give the fork to him 'loaded' and he likes to look at the piece of fruit, talk to it, laugh, and then sometimes puts the fork/food in his mouth to eat. Sometimes he plucks it off with his fingers and eats it. Or tosses it aside. He is trying to 'load' the fork himself, too (stabbing the fruit), but needs a little help with that.
  • His nap is about two hours currently. Nighttime sleep is good.
    • He did have a rough night in the hotel on the way down here to the beach--he only slept from 10pm-5am (Lord, have mercy). Ben, Adie, Kevin, and I sat in the dark, whispering and drinking beers, trying to pretend that we weren't there, but he just cried and cried. He finally pooped out at 10 and then woke up at 5--Kevin and I snuck down to the amazing hotel breakfast so that Ben and Adie could sleep longer. Thankfully he's rebounded well from that!
  • He still likes to put things into things. I had set out an empty laundry basket in the basement last week, and when I went to get it to take it upstairs, he'd put a couple of his toys inside (which made me smile).
  • When I catch him doing something 'right' or when he makes a connection, I say Good job! and we clap. Still a big fan of clapping. :)
  • He is Captain Careful when it comes to climbing up/down things now. He'll climb up, and then turns around to go feet first/bellyside down whatever it is that he's climbed (slides, coffee table, bed, couch, stairs). It's so cute to watch his feet 'feel' for the ground.
  • He is wearing 24 month/2T sleepers now. Still in 18 month shorts and some 12-18 mo., 18-24 mo., and a few 24 mo./2T T-shirts. I need to retire a few of the 12-18 mo. shirts because I'm just now remembering that they were short the last time he wore them (belly shot!).
  • Current Tooth Count: 12

Softening Up the Garden a Bit

Here was the front garden bed last week before my dad unleashed the chainsaw on that large beast of a shrub.

After he was done, we were left with a nice space to fill in. I have 3-4 gardening books I've picked up at Goodwill the past few months, so I looked through them the other day and made a list of plants I liked to fill that space. (I will preface this by saying I plan to move the grasses into some other configuration in the fall, and the red begonias were pre-operation-shrub-removal and don't make as much sense. They'll have to do for now.)
 Looking better already!

Kevin was on stump removal duty one night last week.
After digging it out a little
It ended up taking him about 45 minutes, I think, to get it all out--stubborn and strong, it was.
Don't mess with this guy and his new pick mattock! :)

Then it was time to plant!! I'd gone to Home Depot with my list of potentials, and I ended up settling on a pair of Butterfly Bushes with a pretty purple flower.

I had to go back to Home Depot to get mulch to finish it off, and next to the checkout, there just happened to be some clearance plants-- including some smaller white Butterfly Bushes for $1 a piece!! I decided to buy 3, unsure if I'd put them all up front or maybe drop a couple in another bed. I laid them out with 2 and then 3, and I decided to go with all 3 to fill it in a bit more. The purples will get 4-5 feet tall and wide, but these whites will only get 2-4 feet tall and wide. Sooo, they might get crazy and I'll have to unclutter next year, but for now, I like what I see.
From behind
The mulch will fade to match soon, I hope--it's the same stuff as the rest of the bed.
And the front
If these plants were my friends, they'd be soft-spoken and friendly. :)
Much better than the former spiky (and mean) counterpart.

They've been in about a week now, and I really like how they are looking. I know I'm not 'done' done because I feel like the lilies to the right are really heavy, and the grasses, too, so I want to try to get some more balance going on. I am curious to see what it looks like once the butterfly bushes grow to full size, so I won't do anything else until the fall (except weed the horrible crab grass). :)
