I mentioned that our garden/yard/weeds went crazy while we were on vacation, and I was only able to get out to weed one morning this week, so most of the craziness remains. In the garden, some things got scorched (peas) while others thrived (tomatoes)--last night, as I was making dinner, I noticed our first tomatoes were ripe and ready! After dinner, we went outside to pick some, and Lewis got to both pick and eat the first one. He's not really a fresh tomato fan, so I'm hoping that has changed and that he will help me with eating them this summer (since Kevin doesn't like them). I'll hopefully have enough to make some marinara to eat/freeze, too, and I'm still on a quest to find a good salsa recipe!
Here's Lewis, finding the first perfect one to pick:
Here it is, Mama! A 'mato!
I'm going to eat you, my pretty.
I picked just a few cups last night, but there are quite a few that should be ready this weekend. There are many nooks and crannies in which to find them, so I had trouble getting to some (and found a few rotten ones that had been overlooked already).
We came home to the plant, like this, leaning on our table and chairs.
It had grown up and toppled over its cage. I guess I need to get bigger tomato cages since this seems to be a common occurrence with the cherry variety. Note to self for next year. :) I staked it last night and tried to spread out some of the plant to redistribute the weight, but it's still so top-heavy and not really standing upright. I think a few more stakes would help, so I'll have to get some more.
